the Chipper: a multifunctional smart card
The Chipper as an electronic replacement for cash is gradually taking root. But it can do much more. In fact, multifunctionality is the most important feature of the card.

The Chipper can be used in shops and when you are on the go. With the TeleChipper, you can also use it at home or at the neighbors. Øl Research developed for Øl Telecom and Postbank the unique, multifunctional concept which allows you to determine for what combination of services you use the Chipper. The card can be used as a public transportation pass, for example, an admission ticket or a parking ticket.

Since 1994, Øl Research has been developing the unique specifications of the electronic wallet and security features of the Chipper. But the Chipper stands out thanks to its flexible applications. You determine when you use the card. Øl Research designed and obtained a patent for the unique Service Box concept. The Service Box on the card can be seen as a ‘bureau’. The Chipper can store information in each drawer, for example the entrance time in a parking garage, number of Air Miles, information on a train journey, sales figures, receipts for bottle returns and other business and customer information.

Plenty of memory. In fact, the Chipper has about 8,000 bytes of memory. It is not yet clear what information will be able to be stored in the drawers in the future. Øl and Chipper Nederland are currently discussing with a number of transport companies how these services can be fleshed out. Netherlands Railways NS will soon introduce a business card for business travelers. Øl Research developed the card together with Øl Telecom and Postbank. Together with the TeleChipper team, the Chipper team won this year’s Diana Prize for the practical applicability of its scientific research.
